Prime Minister Hun Manet Leads the 17th Cambodian Veterans Day Celebrations

Phnom Penh, June 26, 2024 – This morning, on June 26, 2024, Prime Minister Hun Manet, also serving as the First Vice President of the Cambodian Veterans Association, presided over the 17th Cambodian Veterans Day celebrations. The event took place at the National Defense University in Russey Keo, Phnom Penh.

During his address marking the 17th anniversary of Cambodian Veterans Day, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the significance of June 21 as a day to honor the heroic sacrifices of Cambodia’s armed forces and civilians. These contributions, he noted, have been crucial in maintaining the country’s territorial integrity and ensuring peace, which underpins Cambodia's ongoing economic and social development.

The Prime Minister recounted the turbulent times that led to the devastating war and the brutal regime of Pol Pot, which left many veterans disabled and families mourning their martyrs. Since liberation on January 7, 1979, the government has prioritized improving the living standards of veterans, with the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation working alongside other institutions to facilitate veterans’ access to public services.

Prime Minister Hun Manet extended his gratitude to all veterans and their families for their steadfast dedication to national defense and development. He paid tribute to the fallen heroes and expressed his deep respect for all who have suffered in the service of their country.

He also highlighted that veterans' welfare remains a key focus in the government's political agenda, especially during the 7th legislature of the National Assembly. The government has introduced the Pentagon Strategy, aimed at bolstering employment growth, equity, efficiency, and sustainability. This strategy is part of the broader vision toward achieving Cambodia 2050, focusing on strengthening social protection systems and food security for all Cambodians. The strategy emphasizes that no Cambodian citizen should be left behind, and the expansion of social protection systems will be based on sustainability, budgetary feasibility, social equity, and the capability to broaden the system’s scope through systematic development.

This annual celebration not only commemorates the sacrifices made by Cambodian veterans but also reinforces the nation's commitment to acknowledging their contributions towards building a stable and prosperous Cambodia.
